KEEP OR DISCARD? 7 TIPS TO DECLUTTER your WARDROBE + FREE PDF

The last time I wrote a blog post about decluttering, I had just moved to the country. I had freed myself of a life that I had felt really stuck in, and my new priority was to experience as much freedom as I could.

And then Covid19 happened.

The global pandemic has shifted our lives and perceptions in so many ways, to a point where I would actually even consider using a conjunction at the start of a sentence for dramatic effect.

Because it’s 2020.

My personal experience has been that I have had time to think about what really matters to me, and how I want my life to look in the future based on that understanding. So if you don’t know what happened, I have a YouTube channel where I chronicle my whole life. For the sake of this narrative though, to cut a long story short, after the lockdown period, I ended up moving to the port city of Fremantle, where I indeed intend to build a settled life. Goodbye, living everywhere!

When I first realised I was settling for a long time, I assumed that I would start collecting stuff. I assumed that a large reason for why I lived so light for so many years was because I wanted to make my life moveable. It’s true, I definitely have a lot more plants and a few creature comforts that I have added to my life, such as my coffee set up and hand made ceramics collection, but I am in essence, very happy to keep a minimalist life.

I like having fewer things, even if I don’t plan to drive across Australia. I prefer to have only items that fill me with joy. I prefer to keep my space chaos free. I prefer to have fewer things to dust and maintain. I prefer to save money rather than spend it all. I love having a small wardrobe. I guess it’s very clear that even in my settled life, I see more benefits to owning a small wardrobe than to having more outfit ‘options’.

I recently have been thinking a lot about the direction I want my wardrobe to move in. I have been examining the consistency of my style, and have done some decluttering based on that. Many of the reasons I have chosen to remove these items from my wardrobe are because they represent some sort of a style tangent.

The jumpsuit and sequinned top represent items that do not fit into my style. I have created a long term vision for my wardrobe, which I will discuss in the future, and stylistically, these items do not fit in. I do not organically reach for them, as they diverge too much from the vision. The cream pants and blue knit do not fit quite right. I could keep wearing them, but I do not feel my best dressed when I do. I can wear other items instead of these, so for the sake of consistency, I can say goodbye to these.

If you struggle with deciding what to declutter, I have a whole video on the topic, KEEP OR DISCARD? 7 TIPS TO DECLUTTER your WARDROBE. If you would like to see me discuss what I am decluttering today in more detail, here is my new video on the topic.

Finally, I have created a free downloadable PDF with some questions to prompt further decluttering contemplation, if you need it. Here is a summary of the key points to consider when deciding whether you want to keep an item or not.

  1. DOES THE ITEM MAKE YOU HAPPY?

  2. HOW OFTEN DO YOU WEAR IT?

  3. DOES IT ALIGN YOUR WITH YOUR VALUES?

  4. WHAT IS THE CONDITION OF THE ITEM?

  5. IS THIS ITEM VERSATILE?

  6. ARE THERE RECURRING THEMES IN YOUR DISCARD PILE?

  7. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET RID OF IT?
